Learning Happens In Between

... and the Beauty of Breaks

The many variations in a Feldenkrais lesson help us to clarify which interrelationships play a role in our actions... and to come up with new ideas and solutions. For this we need to put ourselves in a learning state that allows us to observe, evaluate, compare and recognise.

The pauses that we build into a lesson, or invite our students to take on their own initiative, are not about "rest". Rather, they serve learning in themselves and serve various purposes: We need time to internally evaluate what we have experienced and to draw consequences from it; We need to switch off activity that has already been triggered in order to be able to take an alternative path, because if we act from a state of permanent readiness, we have already called up a cascade of automatic, habitualised behavious; The moments in which we "rest and digest" give the nervous system time to evaluate, compare, recalibrate and integrate, which increases the chance that something valuable can be transferred into everyday life.

Actual neuroplastic rewiring occurs in sleep. But the more we use curiosity and concious awareness to observe and discriminate differences in our experience, the more our brain will have "something to work with". In this workshop, I will address three different types of "taking a break", so that you yourself can experience more explicitly why all three of these strategies are essential to learning.
