"The Magic of Micromovements"

... and the Greatness of Smallness

When we ask our students to carry out our instructions in the form of small movements, we encounter some deep-rooted beliefs and challenges. A definition of 'small' is relative, both to the person in their sensory experience and to the task at hand. But we can also question where an action begins, how it develops and what is needed if we are to change the global patterns of an action.

Some of our students tell us that they enjoy expansive movements. Some think that a movement has to be a certain size before they are following the instruction. Many interpret the effort they feel when they tune in to themselves in this way as a result of the smallness of the movement itself. Then there are those who find it difficult to relate the relevance of these tiny movements to the way they will act in their daily lives, and also those who feel that they cannot "sense themselves" anymore - as their habituated interpretation of tensions, effort and limits gives them a sense of the boundary between themselves and the environment.

If we want to meet all these people where they are, it can be helpful to make the magic behind these micromovements more tangible. If we give our students good reason to appreciate the greatness of smallness, rather than feeling a "failure", we help them facilitate their own learning. Our work questions the inner assumptions and contradictions people are carrying and it can be worthwhile to make "why we do things small" the theme of the lesson itself. Helping our particpants to appreciate the reasons for asking them to "do smaller movements" may set the stage for their learning in future ATMs.
